Future Blues

Now im sec 4, 16. A point in time when I actually start thinking about my future. I　ｓｔｉｌｌ　ｈａｖｅ　ｎｏ　ｉｄｅａ　ｗｈａｔ　ｃａｒｅｅｒ I want to pursue, what degree I want to have in university, or even what subjects I am going to pick up in Junior College. People really need to have a direction in life, an area that they are very interested in, that drives their lives and their dreams. That pursuit is what i lack and desire.

I finished the Mayor of Casterbridge. Rather draggy, mostly because of the extensive descriptions of countryside and architecture. Being really lazy at home, playing Halo and watching movies. I must start mugging and exercising and spending my time more fruitfully, lest I waste another holiday. Lots of books to read but cannot get started(Dorian Gray is half done, Fountainhead, Gulliver's travels, Farewell to Arms, Sophie's World, biographies for english). Oh yes, must do hol. homework.

Literally Literary was quite fun despite the disappointing turnout. Must hold again next year. I wish I could act in more roles, but i guess i can only blame my poor acting. Can't open up in front of others and display extreme emotions I do not feel. Must work on acting and writing. Discussed with John the sterility of creative writing scene in Lit class. Anyway I need a portfolio.

Band is irritating as i keep experiencing chest pains. hrrmmph...they get worst, maybe i need to see a doctor.

Obama won. But I don't see the point of this big post-racial hoohah. Obama sure is a good orator and actor and politician, but he has not proved his worth. Objectively speaking, a McCain victory would have been more directly advantageous to us as he supports asian free trade, while Obama is more interior-focused and protective. Also, it would be more accurate to say that George Bush helped to seal the democratic victory by losing much of his republican base with his poor administration. Obama also won 95% of african american votes and 60% of other minorities like hispanics and asians. I find it ironic and hypocritical that no one bats an eyelid at the pure bias of the African Americans. If all the white Americans voted McCain, the rest of the world and the media would be screaming RACISM! at America. Until race is entirely not an issue anymore in politics, I would not say America is post-racial. Also, we must be aware that some states like Alabama and Mississippi in which racial discrimination and anti-civil rights movement sentiments were the stringest during the 60s still show a significant slant against obama, with 60% voting McCain. This is especially obvious when compared against the smaller margins when the Senate elections were held, during which the Democrat senators for these states were white.

Installing the ancient ASUS laptop with Linux after a spyware/virus/adware attack crippled it. Excited at the prospects of using a new OS and GUI. I plan to buy some ram for the other HP compaq laptop and hopefully it will be much faster. Need to clear some space in the hard drive too. Pity it is almost impossible to install new graphics cards because of the stupid and lousy Intel integrated chipset.

Plan to attend the popular bookfest at suntec. Need to go with some friends but not sure if anyone's interested. I need to buy warren buffett and obama's biography's for next year's ERP.

Thought of some ideas for some sketches but too lazy to flesh out. Great to be posting again. Bye! =)

Since we are on the topic of Australia, here is a poem very representative of that country and continent, in fact it is my favourite on that subject(not that I have read many). Notice its simple language but strong sense of rhythm, beat, and musicality - what the Aussies call 'Bush Poetry'. The poet was residing in London at the time of writing, so the first stanza is describing British lands. She was feeling rather homesick, I guess, funny how people can only describe or appreciate their country best when away from it.

The recent Lit trip to Australia was Fabulous with a capital "F". We stayed in Perth for 2 days and spent the remainder(4 days) of the trip in Albany, a small town of 30000 south of perth. We met so many wonderful people who are absolutely committed and completely passionate when it comes to literature. I have gone to Australia previously but never have I truly got to know real Australians or get to immerse myself in there culture and history. I could go ranting on and on about the similarities of Australian and Singapore society and culture and people literature weather blahdi blahdi blah... but here are just some highlights of the trip:

Bought a ridiculously cheap copy of the Complete Shakespearean works at 30 OZs(Aussies) but left it behind in a hotel in perth
Bought 5 more books at very good prices(eg. War and Peace at around 7 Sing dollars)
Whale Watching - fantastic, they were huge and they were mating
Sightseeing at the Gap, and the Natural Bridge(cannot be described easily, you must see my photos to get a picture, but to experience the complete majesty and awe of witnessing wide foamy cream-like sea water smash and splash into a 10-story plus chasm heft into a cliff facing the antarctic ocean, you must be there)
Pub Crawl - basically 300 people walk from pub to pub at 9-12 in the night stopping at each pub to recite their own or other people's literature and having a hell of a lot of fun(there were numerous attempts at trying to get a sip of alcohol, which would have succeeded without the adults around)
Sprung Writers Festival - the atmosphere was brilliant, very cozy(there were about a 100 or 200 people there each day, jeson said it felt more like a book club, but everyone was so friendly and treated us very nicely), there so many COOL people and it felt more like a party or a club than a serious writing festival, although we learnt lots.

I have a sudden feeling that the world is full of pretense, full of people with superficial smiles and phony friendliness. To all you little fakes out there, please try to change and discover your true self. To everyone else(I hope that means everyone), please feel happy that you are simple, honest folks that don't need to put up airs.

I would like to stress that this is just some random feeling. I am not directing all this at anyone specifically. You don't to feel insulted if you are not filled with artifice. Actually, sometimes I even feel myself putting up airs, you just have to constantly check upon yourselves and improve. Always gauge the response of others and ask for their feedback. Remember, people know others more than they know themselves. For example, it is impossible for one to psychoanalyse oneself. Do feel free to tell me what you think some of my shortcomings are, I strive to keep an open mind.

Well i am back after a LONG break. Firstly, i must apologise to readers who have been rather disappointed by the absence of posts. I admit that i was lazy during the june holidays and i was really busy with my piano exam afterwards.

Now, back to the Title: Books.

I bought 2 books recently for my Extensive Reading Programme(a reading assignment). This time round the teachers are too lazy to come up with lists so they decided to let international literary panels do it for them. We are to choose 2 books that have won either a Pulitzer, Man Booker Prize, Hugo or Nebula Awards(Science fiction) or the Newbery Medal. Hence I did some research and decided on "Midnight's Children" by Salman Rushdie.(It won the Booker of Bookers - supposedly the best book to have won a booker in the 1st 25 years of that award) I was unsure of whether I should get "The English Patient" or "Middlesex" but settled on the latter eventually (not in the least bit because of the word "sex" in its title).

A recent poll in the US has shown that 1in 4 adults read less than 2 books a year. No wonder they can only have someone of George Bush's calibre as their president. However, I feel that this scenario applies very much to Singaporean society too. Whenever I go to a bookshop, most of the customers are either at the stationery section or at the magazines or browsing through professional non-fiction(eg. financial literacy, cooking etc). I attribute this to the effects of technology on our new "Web 2.0" generation. Much of our time that could be spent reading is instead dumped onto Facebook, email, or our mobile phones. Add this to the insane work hours of adults nowadays and you get a generation that lacks imagination and life(on top of it, much to Bryan's dismay i guess, they also haven't heard of Kant or Keats).

Well, what can about this, you may ask? I think we can afford to put down our blackberries for a moment on the train to read a few pages. Or maybe cut down on the time spent watching those banal reality tv shows. Or even not check your email today(check this article out). Sadly, we have reached a point these days where "any text is a good text", since most people read none at all, so i am not asking you to tackle Shakespeare, Audrey Niffenegger's Time Travelers Wife is a surprising well written but light read.

In the arrow paradox, Zeno states that for motion to be occurring, an object must change the position which it occupies. He gives an example of an arrow in flight. It cannot move to where it is not, because this is a single instant, and it cannot move to where it is because it is already there. In other words, in any instant of time there is no motion occurring, because an instant is a snapshot. Well I have been absent for quite a while. Social Advocacy, Chinese project, Lit PT...I won't turn this into a grumbling session.

Anyway, not many people seem to care a lot about the American presidential election but I swear that it can be extremely interesting. Just look at the republican candidate John McCain. Here's his bio:

John Sidney McCain III (born August 29, 1936) is the senior United States Senator from Arizona and presumptive Republican Party nominee for President of the United States in the upcoming 2008 election.

McCain's grandfather and father were the first pair of father/son Four-Star admirals in the United States Navy. McCain graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1958. He became a naval aviator, flying attack aircraft from carriers. During the Vietnam War in 1967, he narrowly escaped death in the Forrestal fire. Well, look at that part which says he was a POW at vietnam. He was reportedly tortured yet refused to give in. Maybe the torture did something to his mind. He has a bad habit of constantly contradicting himself, so some people say that they wont need the Democrats to defeat him; he is his own greatest enemy. Just refer the video above.

Also note this newsweek article(here's another one) which describes him making some radical and ridiculous statements about excluding China and Russia from the G8 and forming a new UN-like organisation that ONLY includes DEMOCRATIC nations. Its all very idealisticv but how are we ever going to achieve anything if many of the world's powers are excluded from decision-making? Not to mention a potential cold war. We really don't want another George Bush. I had thought he was a decent candidate until now, hopefully its only pre-election ramblings to pander to the neocons or radical republicans.

All my blog readers. I sincerely apologise for the long pause. Shakespeare 24's busyness has risen to such an unbearable level that I will stop posting or have little activity until 23rd March. I am so sorry... ARGH I am typically going home at 8-10pm everyday now. Skipping meals. Skipping sleep(what I'm doing now) Sometimes I catch myself wishing that I had never joined S24. Plus Lit is getting very stressful too. That day Ms Johnson failed my group for the performance task but she was kind enough to give us a second chance. So we are chionging that too, as her expectations will be much higher now that we can redo our presentation. I admit that we did crew up majorly that day, when anurak forgot his lines(not his fault, we were all rushing it very last minute, so he had 1 night to memorise everything) and there were LOOOOONG awkward pauses.

ARghhhh. I have to go back to typing Chinese compo now. Remember, april23rd. You had better be down for S24. Even if you are not, tune in to this space for the pics(if any) and reflections(borring??)

On another note, today's S24 meeting was quite smooth and our class managed to draw 0-0 in the interclass soccer league with 3T, which is supposed to be one of the best, so yah, that was quite an achievement.

By now, this internet browser has become one of Internet Explorer's greatest rivals. Now, I personally love firefox, and hope all those poor deprived people out there who have yet to give it a shot test it NOW. Firstly, its open-source, so people all over the world can create there own extensions or add-ons for it. An example of an add-on, would be poker, clines(both are games) and even skins(Vista Aero for those for want to keep their IE look. personally, i like abstract cobalt)

OK, enough commercials. All I want to say is USE FIREFOX. Its safer and faster than IE.

Shakespeare24!

I have not blogged in a long, long time. I guess this sort of happens when I get extremely busy. I certainly lack self-discipline in blogging. Hmmm... What should I talk about today?

I have decided that I shall do a bit of advertising for my Research Education, which is basically this year-long project teachers create to torture us students. I am doing Shakespeare 24 with 5 other people from my class. Shakespeare 24 is a international event organised by the british council to celebrate shakespeares 444th birthday. Auspicious isn't it. Schools around the globe stage their own Shakespearean plays at 7 pm precisely in their different time zones, so there's a continuous 24 hours of Shakepearean craziness. My group is in charge of part of the Singapore production. We are doing Macbeth, which is a tragedy about a sadistic freak that usurps the throne and becomes king, killing whoever who he suspects. Of course he is defeated in the end.

The production is really busy, as we have produce a drama in a month and we intend on using techniques such as wayang kulit(southeast asian shadow puppetry). Our teachers are pushing are real hard. Garrhhh. I have to meet up with my group during the next 2 days, which are supposed to be holidays(community day = slack).I have to go to sleep. Havent been sleeping much lately. So its me yinan, signing off. Till the next time.

On the lack of social grace in Singaporeans

This recent Straits Times article entitled "S'poreans' lack of social graces a social disgrace" written by Tessa Wong, is based on the writer’s personal feelings of the lack of general urbanity and sensitivity in the Singaporeans of today. She highlights this concern after Minister Mentor brought up the issue in his speech on a ‘gracious society’. The examples brought up range from the absence of simple manners to the racial stereotyping of people of different races.

The issue of the ‘Ugly Singaporean’ has been a hotly discussed topic in recent years. However, it seems to become more and more irritating and impossible to ignore. The lack of grace has manifested itself everywhere, from the virtual world of the web to the common man on the street. This is a particularly important issue since we proclaim to be a very much global metropolis and have even won the bid for the 2010 Youth Olympics recently, but our image of being an economic power in Asia will be marred by this absence of hospitable and friendly citizens.

Another, potentially more devastating concern is discrimination based on people’s race or faith. This directly undermines our system of meritocracy and equality. Even though we Singaporeans pride ourselves in being multi-racial and tolerant, it seems that people are starting to develop stereotypes of races and act upon them. As time passes, the racial strife in Singapore when it was a struggling young nation is quickly becoming forgotten and buried as a distant occurrence of the past. Seemingly innocuous remarks about Indians smelling bad or Malays being lazy may have far-reaching and sinister consequences in the long term.

We cannot afford for this to be so.

Firstly, I strongly believe that education is key in producing not just polite, but morally upright citizens. We have to start inculcating a more refined Singaporean culture into the Singaporeans of tomorrow. The typical civics class is simply not doing enough. We need to engage young people more with more interesting curriculum, and also place a greater emphasis on how they should grow up to become a useful part of our community, not focus on academic results.

Secondly, from a more immediate perspective, we should educate the public with more civility campaigns and foster greater understanding between races. Unfamiliarity breeds fear, and public speeches and campaigns with the help of the media may soon gear Singaporeans for the upcoming YOG, during which we would be visited by officials and representatives from most nations in the world.

Although it is true that we are a young nation that still has to take time to form a more international and gracious culture, as seen in most European countries, I believe that if we work towards it as one nation, we can overcome our differences and in the end become more accepting, more respectable Singaporeans and members of the global community. We need to start today.

Stress

Has anyone wondered, how can we people in my school still possibly be sane considering the amount of stress put on us? Right now, I have about 20 pieces of work listed out on my diary, none of which can be completed in less than an hour. That includes 4 short-term projects, and Research Education, which includes my and my group having to stage a successful(supposedly) play in less than a month and a half's time. Aside from that, Band's concert is coming up and we have 13.5 hours of practice each week. I also have to prepare for my grade 8 piano exam and study for tests(both school and competitions). I have been sleeping between 5-6 hours a day for the past 2 weeks. Thats not to say that anyone else has a better life. I am just about average in terms of workload and commitments relative to the rest of the people I know. BAH...I should be off. This is really a screwed up post.

Birthday...and so much else

Bah. I haven't blogged for 3 or 4 days already. Its been hard thinking of what to say. OK. Lets talk about my birthday first. I guess it was pretty uneventful, in that not many people in my new class know about it. And maybe those who knew were daoing(i hope not, who needs friends like that). Well, i guess the only people who wished me happy birthday were kirk, mark and sheryin(after he heard about it). Nevermind that, i guess we'll all become closer as time goes on. Anyways, people like JY and Bryan remembered me and Mr Law gave me a card. I think he is a awesome teacher. He knows the birthdays of almost the whole cohort and i think he'll probably be making at least one "birthday card" delivery a day. My parents gave me a cake too. I am going to make it a point to remember others' birthdays so i can celebrate with them next time round.

Oh yes, and me and the other LitRA students went to watch Dim Sum Dollies(DSD) on Thursday night. Thursday was rather hectic, as I had a Lit test which I was totally not prepared for. LitRA started out mostly with some pondering about existentialist philo questions, like why should we study Lit? Or why is Lit considered a core Humanities? If you really want I can post LitRA writing start on the above questions, which is basically a one page essay on a given topic that we in LitRA have to do about 5 times a year. I am quite happy that i got relatively good grades for my maiden piece. I really must thank my teachers at The Learning Lab(a sort of cool tuition at United Sqaure@Novena, for those of you in Singapore) who taught me my writing skills. ARGH i am digressing and ranting now!

Any way, I was talking about the LitRA test. We really weren't as prepared as the LitRP students becos we studied the text for a much shorter period of time. I was feeling quite burnt out afterwards and had to go for piano lesson, which my dad sent me too. However, he had a lesson afterwards(he is a varsity lecturer) so i decided to take the LRT(a kind of monorail), then the MRT(subway or metro) to Bishan to meet with a few other LitRA friends. We ate at KFC and I found KFC food to be too greasy for my stomach which is probably because its the first time I ate it in a long time. Then we took the MRT to City Hall and walked to the Esplanade. You wont believe the sheer number of people crowding around the malls downtown on a Thursday evening! We met Ms johnson on the way there(she's my teacher and was also going to DSD). I tried to make conversation with her but it was really rather awkward. Richard was there too, which was surprising. He must be really enthu, even joining us on an outing and paying $60 for it.

DSD was really funny if are a singaporean and understands all the quirks and secrets of the culture of our little red dot. However, i was annoyed by the prevalent use of dialect jokes since i do not understand a word of Cantonese or Hokkien. I guess it must even worse for people of other races like Adithya and Gulshan. Thats the part that needs some thinking over. I really liked the occasional crack at the government(oh dear, i wonder if I will get arrested for the previous comment) but it did stir quite a lot patriotic pride, especially in conjunction with news that Singapore had just won the bid to host the first Youth Olympic Games in 2010. It was mostly slapstick though, so if you were anticipating something more refined then look somewhere else. All in all, a good relaxing time. We really should have more of these outings.

Friday was uneventful. Being in the Band, I performed at arts@the atrium(a school event where people perform music, plays etc.), but not many people I know of went to watch. I guess I didn't deserve it anyway, since we didn't play that well. After school I tried to get people to help out at RE but everyone was slacking I got pissed at Bryan, who didn't focus and was talking to Zhiyuan. So we didn't do anything productive and I left, deciding to allocate the work to be done over the weekend. Then me and bryan went to the Rafflesian Times(school newspaper) meeting, something that i just joined. I decided to write another controversial article this time round. I just get kick doing that. Do buy the next paper to check out my article criticising the Raffles Academy(under Gulshan's name, as I was an unofficial member then). Band was totally slack and everyone was just playing a fool. Oh dear, its 2208 and i have to go to sleep. Bye, sorry for this sub-par post!

HD DVD, anyone?

Thats it , its been announced. The High Definition war between HD DVD(toshiba) and Blu Ray(sony) is finally over. I guess it finally gives us some peace of mind over what kind of HD player to buy next time you are at Courts or Walmart. At one point in time, people were hyping that future DVDs will be printed on both sides, one for HD DVD and another for the Blus and DVD players would have 2 drives. Heres a check on the casualties of this war:

Xbox 360 drives (worldwide) - 300k
PCs with HD DVD (worldwide) - 300k

Standalone players/recorders:

US - 600k units
Europe - 100k units
Japan - 30,000 units

Add it all up, and that's about a 1.3 million customers -- just a fraction of the 10m+ Blu-ray owners out there -- that got boned on HD DVD. Thanks, Toshiba and Sony!(courtesy of http://www.engadget.com/, just so I don't get sued)

The tipping point was when Warner Bros announced that they will be releasing there movies only in the Blu-Ray format. "We concluded that a swift decision would be best," Toshiba president Atsutoshi Nishida said.

"If we had continued, that would have created problems for consumers, and we simply had no chance to win," he said.

ZZZzzzs... i am slacking again. I shouldn't even be posting here since i haven't finished my homework and stuff. I guess i need more of that self control thing. For the past 3 hours i have been trawling the web, reading random nonsense. I dont even know where the time went!

Oh yes By the Way, JY(my friend) has gotten a new liuqin(an ancient chinese guitar, if you want to put it simply). Its all shiny and varnished and elaborately decorated. I cant really tell the difference in tone quality between the new one and the old one, though. His family is also getting a new car, a Nissan Presage. Heres a picture:

I think it is pretty cool and shows that Jy is quite rich. Also JY got his mom as his RE mentor! I wonder what its going to be like - "Jiayu, go wash the dishes this week and I'll give you 1 more mark!" Haha, just joking.

I am trying to learn to beat-box recently because i have witnessed the amazing beat-boxing capabilities of Kaiwen. You should all go and see. Actually beat-boxing is quite easy, its singing and beat-boxing at the same time that is hard. My classmates think my beat-boxing is rather irritating(actually it doesn't sound that cool without a mic and there's a fair bit of saliva involved - yes you heard me, SALIVA). Todays English and Philo test was OK, although the philo test was quite tricky. Anyway Philosophy is not officially counted in our academics, so i dont give a *defecation*. I am going to mug for Chinese now, so BYE...

I just watched this Youtube video which someone send me via MSN. Its horribly funny, but I must admit it is a bit stereotypical and might be offensive to indians. Remember, its all for good fun! Friends are the jewels of our life, we have to appreciate them. As I age, I find that my friends and I have gradually driven apart. We loose our innocence, and great valleys appear between us. Valleys of misunderstandings, valleys of anger, valleys of jealousness. What have we turned into? Just because we are high-achievers in a good school doesn't mean competition should be so fierce! But I am hanging on dearly to some of my closer friends that I have made since we were younger. I subconsciously, however, still seem to find fault with them! Where are the kindness, the care, the love and the selflessness we expect of our buddies? Firstly, have we been demonstrating thse qualities ourselves?
